Butoh Workshop

by Tove–Elena Nicolaysen

The symbiotic body is a butoh related movement workshop open to dancers, actors, therapists, psychologists, educators, other artists and everyone who is interested in experimenting movement from a body/mind connection through butoh. A background in dance or theatre is not required. The workshop is inspirited by respect, safety and no discrimination.

This is a workshop initiated by Nicolaysen, she uses her own experience and research in contemporary butoh dance, physical theatre, energy work and psycho-corporal integrated therapy to create the direction together with the group as well as for each individual participating.

The core of this training is opening our sensory system, which consists in vision, hearing, touch, taste, smell, kinaesthesia. Perception, sensation, emotion and impulse become vehicles in our creative process. Our capacity of connection with one self and with the environment around is the first step in any movement in this workshop. In butoh one connects and honours the workspaces and is therefore always sight specific work, in the way that any choreography and dance will always respect, react and adapt to its environment. Comprehending oneself and one’s reactions is a prominent tool for any artist as well as recognising one’s intentions and objectives can be transcendent for the development of a piece.
